Faith Based Family Decisions

"The key to having God's 'abundant life' is keeping Him in his rightful place in our priorities."
-Joyce Meyer

I like to think of myself as someone who always has it together - I'm a 'peaceful, confident, organized,  energetic, loving mama and amazing wife.' I embrace changes and am always looking for the next challenge. I confront problems with a win-win attitude. I'm known for stepping out of my comfort zone to help anyone in need.

On the surface, I think some of my friends, family and coworkers think I wake-up everyday with a to-do list in hand and an enormous amount of energy ready to tackle it. And often I do! But the truth is, until two years ago I often questioned every aspect of my happiness.

I spent a lot of time feeling weighted down by responsibilities. I ended everyday completely exhausted!  It is hard to explain but I never felt like I was living the life I was created to live. When I really felt like I was losing control, I would add more to my plate or start a new hobby. I was constantly searching for something, for purpose and guidance, and for something to feel right.

Sooner or later, the state of euphoria would wear off and I would feel restless again, without hope. I was stuck in a never ending cycle and I started praying deeply about my life and what was lacking.

Let's take a look back to January 2015. My husband and I just started praying about some major changes. God had been pulling at my heart strings to stay home with our two (sweet and adorable) children and leave my teaching career behind. I wanted someone else to make the decision for us.

Honestly, I was scared to death that we were going to make the wrong decision. What if I missed my career? What if I was not fit to be a stay-at-home mom? I had so many questions and concerns.

Then one day, God spoke loud and clear. I was to quit my job and stay home with my kids. I knew for this to be a success we had to create a budget to fit the needs of our family. In the beginning, it was so hard! I felt like I was constantly saying 'we can't afford that' or 'that's not in the budget.' I had to completely realign my priorities and mindset. We are so thankful to God for giving us the will power to stick to our budget. During this time, He showed up in some mighty ways. God was constantly reminding us everything was in His control and His timing.

The morning I told my boss of my decision I was blown away by His timing. I am sure you have heard the saying "when one door closes, another door opens.." Well, when you pray to God and lay your struggles at His feet, that one door opening could very well mean two doors. Three hours after I told my boss about my resignation, my husband had the first round of a job interview. A few weeks earlier, he had applied to work full-time at a different hospital. His interview went amazing!! Before he left the building, they had already scheduled the second round of the interview for the following week. A few hours after my husband's interview, an appraiser called to schedule an appointment for our house. (We were in the process of refinancing our home to help out our monthly budget.) After speaking with the appraiser, my husbands calls to tell me that he felt an overwhelming sense of God working some major miracles in our lives.

Fast forward one week.....

My husband's second round of his interview was a success and we accepted the full-time position they offered him. On that exact same day, we heard the results from our home appraisal. Our house got appraised for more than we needed. At this moment, my husband and I were amazed at how God had blessed our family.

Our lives didn't change overnight and I understand that your's may not as well. It's not always possible to quit your career. But, what you can control, are the decisions you make everyday. You can choose to do more of what you love and let go of all the rest.

Our family had no idea of the plans God had for our lives. I share this pivotal experience in our lives as an encouragement for you to make every decision your family makes a faith based one by putting Christ at the center of them.

Have you ever thought about what changes you want to make in your life? What are you doing to make those changes? Let me know in the comments! I'd love to hear from you.
